A bit of information about what the Animal Kingdom provides for our creative moments! Contact me if you have any questions. My first curiosity about unspun wool was when I purchased my needlefelting machine. Machine Needle felting is a newer technique which uses dry wool and felting needles.
Wool and other natural animal fibers that have been cleaned and combed, referred to as "carded" may be in the form of Batts, Roving, Top & Locks.

Batts (shown above) are great for felting flat work, they are wider so some of the fibers are already spread out for you. Batts are like flat roving, the fibers are in random directions but the shape of a batt is thinner in depth and can be a few to many inches wide and long, kind of like a piece of quilt batting. You can easily tear the batt into strips so it is like roving.

Roving (shown above) is a long piece approximately two to four inches in diameter with the fibers in random direction.
Top is also a long piece like roving; Wool Top is also referred to as "worsted top"…however the processing is more complex. The combing of the wool keeps the individual fibers parallel.

Locks (shown above) are soft and curly shorn from different breeds of sheep.
I hope this information will be helpful to you :o)
